Modern Languages
The Modern Languages Department at August London High School is committed to fostering linguistic proficiency and cultural understanding among our students. Our primary objectives are multifaceted and comprehensive:
Firstly, we aim to develop students' ability to understand native speakers communicating at a natural pace. This involves extensive listening practice using authentic materials such as podcasts, news broadcasts, and films in the target language.
Secondly, we focus on developing students' oral expression skills, emphasizing proper accent and grammar. This is achieved through regular speaking exercises, presentations, and conversational practice in class.
Thirdly, we work on improving students' written expression in the target language. This includes various writing assignments ranging from short compositions to more complex essays as students progress through the levels.
Fourthly, we introduce students to literature in languages other than English. Through reading and critical analysis of selected literary works, students gain deeper insights into the culture and thought processes associated with the language they are studying.
Lastly, we strive to expose students to different ways of thinking, broadening their perspectives and fostering cultural empathy.
Our language department offers classes in Spanish and French, with five levels available in each language, including Advanced Placement options for highly proficient students. Through this comprehensive approach, we aim to equip our students with the language skills and cultural awareness necessary for success in our increasingly interconnected world.
